Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. - The Newberry College women's soccer team (1-4) went into its match against West Georgia (3-2-1) in hopes of sweeping their two matches in the Wolves Invitational. However, Newberry left Carrollton with a 1-1 record as the host team defeated Newberry, 4-1, on Sunday.
The first half was less than ideal for the scarlet and gray as the Wolves put two shots into the back of the net before head coach Karrie Miller decided to make a change in goal by subbing in redshirt freshman goalkeeper Megan Hrenchir (Lawrence, Kan.) in the 25th minute to give Newberry a new look in goal.
However, the Wolves scored another goal in the first half as Samantha Jones (Roswell, Ga.) scored off a rebound from a corner kick by Jenna Greathouse (Lenexa, Kan.) in the 39th minute.
The beginning of the second half would see another keeper change as redshirt freshman Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica) came into the game. Jackson played the whole second half only allowing one goal in the 62nd minute as Meg Sytsma (Duluth, Ga.) scored off an assist from Erika Harvey (Roswell, Ga.).
Newberry refused to remain scoreless in the game as freshman midfielder Lora Moore (Raleigh, N.C.) scored with 14 seconds remaining. Moore scored her first collegiate goal as the ball rebounded off defenders in front of the goal and she was able to get the ball in the net. The assist was credited to senior midfielder Katelyn Luby (Charleston, S.C.).
Newberry will return home on Wednesday to face off against Mars Hill in the scarlet and gray's SAC opener. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. and the men's team will play later in the day against Clayton State at 5 p.m.
