Newberry College women's soccer victorious in overtime, 2-1, over North Alabama

Box Score

CARROLLTON, Ga. - Playing on the road for the third time this season, the Newberry women's soccer team (1-3) was determined to end its recent losing streak and was successful as the scarlet and gray toppled North Alabama Lions (2-3) in overtime, 2-1.

The scarlet and gray struck the first blow in the 32nd minute off a penalty kick by junior forward Lindsey Landgrebe (Springfield, Ill.). Landgrebe was tackled in the penalty area by Lion defenders and was able to capitalize on the foul and give the scarlet and gray the 1-0 lead.

Newberry continued to hold the lead until the 81st minute, when North Alabama freshman forward Megan Brown (Tupelo, Miss.) scored an unassisted goal to notch the score at one goal apiece.

The two teams battled the final nine minutes of regulation and headed into overtime with both teams searching for ways to score the decisive goal.

The scarlet and gray were the first team to find the right path to victory as senior forward Lauren Carbonell (Miami, Fla.) dribbled her way through the Lion defense and beat freshman goalkeeper Alex McLay (Naples, Fla.) with a far post shot that clinched the victory for Newberry in the 96th minute.

Newberry's freshman goalkeeper Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) saved three shots in the victory and improved her record to 1-3-0

The scarlet and gray will have one day off in Carrollton, Ga. before facing off against the host team of the Wolves Invitational, West Georgia. Newberry will play Sunday at 1 p.m. at UWG's Observatory Field.
