Newberry falls in double overtime in season opener

Box Score

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Newberry College women's soccer team opened up the 2008 season Friday, but the scarlet and gray were unable to capture a road victory against Palm Beach Atlantic as they lost, 2-1 in double overtime.

Newberry allowed a goal in the 111th minute that clinched the game's fate. Forward Grace Alfredson (West Palm Beach,Fla.), received a long pass down the right side from sophomore Angela Kuhn (North Fort Meyers, Fla.), and scored the game-ending goal and her second of the game.

PBA lead off the scoring in the 31st minute as Alfredson received a long up-field pass from senior Brandi Bianco (Palm Harbor,Fla.) and eventually struck the ball past Newberry freshman goalkeeper Megan Hrenchir (Lawrence,Kan.).

Newberry would return the favor as senior midfielder Katelyn Luby (Charleston, S.C.) scored one minute before half time. Luby collected a deflected ball off a PBA player and swiftly pushed the ball into the back of the net to tie the game in the 44th minute.

The second half presented a few close calls but no goals as the two teams trudged on into overtime, where the Sailfish would score the decisive goal in the 111th minute. Newberry continued its trend from last year, when the scarlet and gray played a NCAA D-II record ten overtime games.

Newberry's Hrenchir made seven saves in the game, but still collected the loss as PBA goalkeeper Ashley Morrell (Lake Worth,Fla.) collected the victory in goal for the Fish.

Two yellow cards were issued in the game. Newberry's Ashleigh Mayer (St. Louis, Mo.) received her caution in the 18th minute and PBA's Alfredson followed suit in the 77th minute.

The scarlet and gray will continue their Florida road trip as they battle the Lynn Fighting Knights on Sunday at 1 p.m. before returning to Newberry for Labor Day.
