Indians shut down Lenoir-Rhyne, 5-0

HICKORY, N.C. - The Newberry College men's tennis team got back on the winning track Tuesday, scorching Lenoir-Rhyne College, 5-0. The Indians (6-5, 3-1 SAC) will play Catawba Wednesday, while the Bears (0-9, 0-7 SAC) end the 2008 regular season without a victory.

The Indians reshuffled their line-up due to injury concerns, but Coach Juan Pablo Favero's team did not skip a beat.

New No. 1 doubles combination Daryl Van Vuuren (Durban, South Africa) and Lucas Mattos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) waltzed past Robert Dough and Nathanael Summer, 8-1, and Felipe Sobrinho (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Mikael Jurkovic (Atlanta, Ga.) scored an 8-0 sweep over Alex Stockton and Andy Bridges.

Singles came just as easily for the Scarlet and Gray. Van Vuuren romped Elkins by a 6-0, 6-1 count, and Mattos cleaned house against Stockton with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep. Jurkovic clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Bridges.

The match was halted after the Indians clinched the match. Newberry will look to stay hot in Wednesday's battle of the Indians, which starts at 1 p.m. in Salisbury.
