Indian Tennis Clawed by No. 8 Bearcats

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College men's tennis team lost their third consecutive match Friday afternoon, falling 8-1 to No. 8 Lander University at the Cannon Tennis Courts. The Indians fell to 1-3 with the loss, while the Bearcats improved to 6-2.

Newberry got off to a bad start by dropping all three doubles matches. The closest battle came in the top flight, where South African duo Daryl Van Vuuren (Durban, South Africa) and Jeremy Smith (Durban, South Africa) fell just 8-6 to Andre Ivarsson and Henrik Williers, the 10th ranked doubles team in Division II tennis.

The Indians took three singles contests to third sets, dropping two. Van Vuuren was shut out by Willers in the opening set of his second flight match but won the second set 7-6 (7-4). Willers, a top 15 player in the Mid-Atlantic Region, took the deciding set for a 0-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-8 win. No. 5 singles player Felipe Sobrinho (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) also fell in three sets, 7-5, 2-6, 10-7 to Juan Manrique.

Newberry finally got on the board in the sixth flight when Mikael Jurkovic (Atlanta, Ga.) came from behind to top Carlos Marques 1-6, 6-2, 10-8.

The Indians have the weekend off before hosting Lincoln Memorial Monday at 2 p.m. The match is the 2008 South Atlantic Conference opener for both teams.
