Indians swept by No. 18 USC Aiken, 9-0

AIKEN, S.C. - The Newberry College men's tennis team sustained their first loss of the season Monday afternoon as they were swept 9-0 by No. 18 USC Aiken (2-1). The Indians (1-1) won just three sets on the afternoon.

The Pacers began the proceedings by taking all three doubles matches with ease. Dagoberto Darezzo and Edward Horne, the No. 2 doubles team in all of Division II tennis, handled Daryl Van Vuuren (Durban, South Africa) and Jeremy Smith (Durban, South Africa) 8-3. The team of Maxim Sukharev (Vilnius, Lithuania) and Lucas Mattos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) fell 8-4, while Felipe Sobrinho (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Mikael Jurkovic (Atlanta, Ga.) lost by the same score.

Sukharev came close to scoring a point for the Indians in his No. 1 singles match, taking the first set from No. 19 Darezzo before fading down the stretch, losing 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Sobrinho also won the first set in his No. 5 singles match before losing to Diego Duran 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. No. 4 singles was also a tight match, with Mattos losing 6-2, 3-6, 10-6 to Edward Horne.

The Indians host Spartanburg Methodist in exhibition action Wednesday at 2 p.m.
