Box Score NEWBERRY - The Newberry College women's soccer team (6-5-1, 4-1-0 SAC) continued their dominant ways on the defensive end as they shutout their opponent for the third straight game. However, the scarlet and gray offense was unable to muster a goal as Newberry tied Georgia College (8-1-3), 0-0 in double overtime.
The game against the Bobcats also served as Senior Day festivities as six seniors were honored; Najla Bubtana (Miami, Fla.), Mandi Butler (Holly Springs, N.C.), Lauren Carbonell (Miami, Fla.), Elizabeth Jones (Anchorage, Alaska), Katelyn Luby (Charleston, S.C.) and Ashleigh Mayer (St. Peters, Mo.).
With all six seniors starting, Newberry jumped out of the gate and almost had a goal in the 2nd minute as Carbonell challenged GCSU goalkeeper Mary Rob Plunkett (Augusta, Ga.) on a through ball. Plunkett bobbled the ball which allowed Carbonell to get a shot off that sailed to the right of the goal.
For the remainder of the first half neither team was able to rally a goal-scoring opportunity as both defensives were solid only allowing five shots on goal in the first half.
Newberry had another goal-scoring opportunity this time in the 80th minute. A Bobcat defender played the ball back to Plunkett, who illegally handled the ball and Newberry was awarded an indirect kick inside the penalty area. However the scarlet and gray's shot was deflected by the GCSU defense and cleared away.
With the tie, Newbery extended two streaks. The scarlet and gray extended its unbeaten streak to five game and the defense has not allowed a goal in the last 293 minutes of play.
Freshman goalkeeper Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) had two saves in the game as she recorded her fourth shutout of the season.
Newberry returns to South Atlantic Conference play with a match up against Lincoln Memorial on Tuesday, Oct. 4th. Kick off is set for 3 p.m. at the Newberry Soccer Complex.
