Box Score MORROW, Ga. - The Newberry College women's soccer team continued their recent string of success as they defeated Clayton State, 1-0. The scarlet and gray have won their last three games and five of their last seven games.
Playing in their third game in a week, Newberry showed no sign of fatigue as they out shot Clayton State 12-4 in the game and 8-2 in first half.
Despite the shot advantage it would take the scarlet and gray until the second half to score against the Lakers' defense. In the 58th minute, junior midfielder Sara Griffith (Marietta, Ga.) connected on a cross from sophomore midfielder Amberly Fowler (Taylors, S.C.) at the top of the penalty area and her shot zipped past Clayton State's goalkeeper.
The scarlet and gray defense held strong for the third straight game as they held the Lakers' offense scoreless throughout the game and minimized their scoring attacks through suffocating defense.
All four of the defensive line; Megan Douglas (Bradford, England), Sara Geisman (Middleburg Heights, Ohio), Elizabeth Jones (Anchorage, Alaska) and Ashleigh Mayer (St. Peters, Mo.) played the entire 90 minutes.
Freshman goalkeeper Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) recorded her second shutout of the season as she had two saves on the game. With the win, Rhoades improved her record to 5-5.
Newberry's next game against Tusculum on Saturday at 2 p.m. will serve as the scarlet and gray's homecoming game, where they will try to extend their lead in the South Atlantic Conference.
