Box Score NEWBERRY - Six different Lady Indians scored as Newberry College defeated Brevard College, 10-1, in NCAA Division II women's soccer action Wednesday afternoon.
The Lady Indians broke out of their offensive struggles in a big way scoring ten goals; two more than they had managed in their previous seven games combined.
Freshman Amberly Fowler (Taylors, S.C.) started the scoring in the fourth minute when Brooke Tumblin (Florence, S.C.) found her on a runner up the middle. Fowler took the pass from Tumblin and beat Brevard goalie Carcy Cavanuagh in the left side of the goal.
Tumblin would get a goal of her own three minutes later when she took a pass from Sara Geisman (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) in the middle, dribbled to the right and fired a shot into the left side of the goal.
Tumblin would add a second goal in the 15th minute as she made a run up the middle before beating Cavanuagh again, this time to the right. Fowler returned the favor from earlier in the game hitting Tumblin right in stride for the assist.
The Newberry onslaught continued in the 22nd minute when Inga Woiwode (El Paso, Texas) took a touch pass from Lauren Carbonell (Miami, Fla.) in the box and deposited in the lower left hand corner for her fourth goal of the season.
In the 37th minute, Mandi Butler (Holly Springs, N.C.) got her first goal of the season when she received a pass from Katherine Prete (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and shot it off the right post and into the goal. Heather Sexton (Florissant, Mo.) also received an assist for beginning the play.
Butler and Prete combined yet again just one minute later as Prete forwarded a cross from Katelyn Luby (Charleston, S.C.) and Butler beat Cavanuagh to her right.
Woiwode ended the first half scoring in the 41st minute when she took a pass from Luby in front of the goal and tapped it in before Cavanuagh could get over.
In all the Lady Indians outshot the Tornados, 23-1, in the first half and went in to the break with a 7-0 lead.
Newberry struck again very early in the second half when Lindsey Landgrebe (Springfield, Ill.) scored from 25 yards out in just the 48th minute to make the score 8-0.
Adriana Farfan (West Palm Beach, Fla.) got on the board for a third straight game when she scored an unassisted goal in the 74th minute. Farfan dribbled to the right side of the box and beat Cavanuagh one on one.
Farfan would finish the Newberry scoring in eight minutes later when she and Sara Griffith (Marietta, Ga.) combined on a give and go in the box. Fowler also received an assist after sending in the entry pass. With the goal, Farfan became the fourth Lady Indian in the match to record a multi-goal game.
Brevard avoided the shutout when Ashley Fincher scored on a header off a corner kick by Kelly Harris in the 86th minute.
Newberry dominated the box score, outshooting the Tornados, 34-3, in the game. The Lady Indians also took 13 corner kicks while Brevard had just one.
Cavanuaugh played valiantly recording eight saves in the game including two spectacular ones in the second half to stop the bleeding for the Tornados.
The 10 goals and 31 points the Lady Indians tallied are the most by Newberry since they defeated Converse College, 11-0, on October 5, 2006. It is the fifth time in team history that Newberry has scored in double digits in one game.
The Lady Indians also continued their strong defensive play. This is the sixth time in eight games this year that Newberry has allowed one or fewer goals.
Newberry improves to 3-1-4 on the year and remains undefeated while playing Division II opponents.
The Lady Indians will try and continue their offensive explosion, as well as improve on their 1-0-1 conference record, when they travel to Wingate, N.C., to play the Bulldogs of Wingate University in a South Atlantic Conference matchup. The game will take place on Saturday, September 22, at 8 p.m.
