Newberry ties Clayton State, 2-2, in home opener

Box Score

NEWBERRY - Brooke Tumblin scored a goal and recorded an assist as Newberry College tied Clayton State University, 2-2, in NCAA Division II women's soccer action Saturday afternoon. The double overtime tie was the Lady Indians' third in a row to start the season.

Coming off a trip through the Midwest where Newberry played two games to double overtime 1-1 ties, the Lady Indians retuned to the Newberry Soccer Complex for their home opener against Clayton State University.

The Lady Indians' offense, which had struggled to score in the first two games, was aggressive right from the start and took an early 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when Tumblin (Florence, S.C.) flicked a crossing pass from senior Inga Woiwode (El Paso, Texas) over to freshman Amberly Fowler (Taylors, S.C.) for the goal. The goal was Fowler's first of her collegiate career.

Newberry extended its lead in the 38th minute when Tumblin took a cross from senior Sarah Barnes (Rolla, Mo.) and beat a Lakers defender to record her first goal of the season. The goal put the Lady Indians up by a score of 2-0 and came at the end of a five minute offensive attack in which Newberry took two other shots as well as two corner kicks.

The lead would not last long though as Clayton State scored to make it 2-1 just seven seconds after they restarted play. The Lakers' Olaitan Yusuf took a pass from Teresa Dack-Smith and out-raced the Newberry defense down the right side before beating Newberry goalie Megan Hrenchir (Lawrence, Kan.) in a one-on-one situation.

Yusuf's goal broke the Division II record for fastest consecutive goals by opposing teams. The previous record of :11 seconds had occured twice, first in 1998 in a game between Ashland and Sonoma, and again in 2003 in a game between Cal. St. Los Angeles and Cal. St. Bakersfield.

In the second half the Lakers' offense wasted little time tying the score as Yusuf again found herself in a one-on-one with Hrenchir, and beat the freshman with a shot to the top right corner of the goal in just the 51st minute.

Clayton State was in a position to try and win the game at the end of regulation when Yusuf appeared to have an open goal and the ball, but her shot was stopped by Barnes who slid in for a defensive save to preserve the tie.

Both teams fought hard in the extra periods but neither team could get any good looks to win the game. Newberry had two shots on goal and Clayton State had one, but all three were stopped easily by the opposing team's keeper. With neither team able to push the winning goal across, the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

Tumblin's goal was the 17th of her career, which moves her into a tie for fourth in career goals in the Newberry record books. Tumblin ties Jami Schliesman who played two seasons for the Lady Indians in 1997 and 1998.

Newberry's next game starts a three game road swing for the Lady Indians which will begin on Tuesday, September 4, when they travel to Charleston to face Division I Charleston Southern University.
