Box Score ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Inga Woiwode scored her first goal of the season as the Newberry College women's soccer team played the University of Missouri-St. Louis Tritons to a 1-1 tie in double overtime to begin its season.
Woiwode (El Paso, Texas) put the Lady Indians on the board first when she was fouled in the penalty area and connected on the resulting penalty kick, giving Newberry a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute.
The score remained 1-0 until late in the second half when Missouri-St Louis' Sarah Stone took a corner kick from Maggie Gabris and beat Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.) to tie the game at 1-1.
The teams played two overtimes to try and determine a winner but neither team could push across the winning goal. The Tritons continued to put pressure on the Lady Indians' defense in the extra periods, taking three shots and two corner kicks. Newberry's defense held firm for most of the night against a Tritons team that out shot the Lady Indians 15-10 in regulation and 10-4 in the second half and both overtimes.
Beckerle played well in her homecoming; the St. Louis native recorded six saves and allowed just one goal, while playing all 110 minutes. Her last save came in the second overtime and helped preserve the tie for Newberry.
Newberry starts the year 0-0-1 and will next travel to Edwardsville, Ill., where it will face off against the Cougars of the University of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. The team's first home match of the year will be on September 1, when the Lady Indians return home to host Clayton State University.
