Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C. - Newberry baseball fell 11-4 in non-conference action against West Virginia State University in at Greenville Municipal Stadium in Greenville, S.C. on Thursday evening.
The Indians jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the second inning when Yellow Jacket second baseman Jeffrey Miller misplayed an easy ground ball that resulted in two runs.
With the bases loaded, Indian first baseman Matt Webb hit a soft ground ball that skid past Miller�s glove and into short right field. Matt Awtrey and Anthony Dillenger came around to score.
West Virginia State answered with a five-run top half of the third, highlighted by a two-run double to left center from Yellow Jacket centerfielder Eric Workman.
Newberry got one run back in the bottom of the inning when Scott Horvath drove in his 11th run of the season on a ground out to the shortstop.
With the Indians down two, West Virginia State pulled away in the fourth with a three-run double off of Newberry reliever by Josh Miller. The line drive grazed off the edge of centerfielder Tyler Manasa�s glove and three Yellow Jackets crossed home plate.
Newberry starter Thomas Berryhill lasted just three innings, giving up five runs on five hits and had four strikeouts.
The Yellow Jackets threw a different pitcher in each of the nine innings, with Patrick Muldoon being awarded the win.
Newberry baseball returns to action this Saturday with a double-header at Wingate University in Wingate, N.C. First pitch of game one is set for a 4 p.m.
