Newberry drops 8-1 decision to No. 20 Presbyterian in SAC opener

CLINTON, S.C. - No. 20 Presbyterian College defeated Newberry College, 8-1, Monday afternoon to improve to 7-4 on the season overall and 2-0 in South Atlantic Conference play. Newberry is now 1-5 overall and 0-1 in the SAC.

Maxim Sukharev had the only victory of the day for Newberry when he won at No. 1 singles with a score of 6-3, 6-4 over Aaron Chapman.

Presbyterian opened the match by garnering victories in all three of the doubles matches. Presbyterian's doubles tandem of Aaron Chapman-Matthew Martin won at No. 1 doubles by defeating the Indian's Jeremy Smith-Daryl Van Vuuren with a score of 8-6.

Brad Luciuk-Michael Nicol made the score 2-0 in favor of PC with their 8-1 win over Newberry's Scott Gates-Lucas Mattos. Presbyterian went up 3-0 when Andrew Lee-Zach Glankler defeated Maxim Sukharev-Felipe Sobrinho at No. 2 doubles with a score of 8-0.

PC's Matthew Martin won at No. 2 singles with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Daryl Van Vuuren to improve to 8-2 on the season. Ruan Olivier defeated Newberry's Jeremy Smith with a score of 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. Michael Nicol won at No. 4 singles over Lucas Mattos with a score of 6-3, 7-6.
 
Patrick Feduik won at No. 5 singles for the Blue Hose with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Felipe Sobrinho to improve to 8-3 on the season. PC's Andrew Lee defeated Scott Gates with his 6-3, 7-6 win at No. 6 singles.

Newberry travels to Brevard College on Friday for a 2 p.m. start. Newberry's next home match is next Wednesday, March 28, when the Indians host Wingate.
