NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newcomer Maxim Sukharev helped lead the Newberry College men's tennis team to a 6-3 win over North Georgia College and State University here Thursday.
Sukharev, a freshman from Vilnius, Lithuania, won in No. 2 singles, over NGCSU's Cornelis Bal, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, while teaming up with Jeremy Smith (Durban, South Africa) in No. 2 doubles to beat Bal and Vlad Lumezanu, 8-6.
Lucas Mattos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) defeated Lumezanu, 6-2, 6-2, in No. 4 singles, and Felipe Sobrinho (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) beat William Davis, 6-1, 6-2 in No. 5 singles. The Indians won two matches by default to help the winning cause.
The Indians return to action on Monday, hosting USC Aiken for a 2 p.m. start at the Newberry College Tennis Complex.
