NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College men's tennis team dropped a 9-2 decision to Augusta State in its season opener here Wednesday.
The Indians' two victories both came in doubles competition.
The No. 1 doubles pairing of Daryl Van Vuuren (Durban, South Africa) and Scott Gates (Atlanta, Ga.) claimed an 8-4 win over Lindy Blount and Alfred Smith.
The No. 2 doubles pairing of Maxim Sukharev (Vilnius, Lithuania) and Jeremy Smith (Durban, South Africa) won, 8-4, over Figuerio and Braga.
The Indians return to action on Wednesday, hosting North Georgia College and State for a 2 p.m. start.
