NEWBERRY - The Newberry College Lady Indians spread the ball around well as 12 different players scored en route to a 75-57 win over visiting Morris College in the Friday nightcap of the Newberry Classic.
Newberry (4-1) was led by freshman Briana Johnson (Irmo, S.C.) who scored 12 points. Tonique Frasier (Walterboro, S.C.) betted 11 points, while Carnicha Bellinger (Greenville, S.C.) scored 10.
Morris (2-8) was led by Christina McFadden's 14 points. Christen Cooper scored 12 and Amii Rodgers scored 10.
Newberry never trailed in the game and allowed only one Lady Hornet field goal in the opening eight minutes of the game. The Lady Indians led by as many as 16 in the first half before taking a 37-23 lead to the locker room.
The Lady Indians forced 32 Morris turnovers in the game, and recorded 21 steals. Ten of those steals came in the second half which the Lady Indians converted into 20 points off turnovers in the second stanza.
Morris was unable to get closer than 12 points from the lead, while Newberry extended the lead to as much as 21 points late in the game.
Points from the outside were few and far between for Newberry because of an interior advantage, outscoring Morris 62-26 in the paint. 18 Newberry points came on the fast break, while the bench chipped in for 47 points.
The Lady Indians resume play tomorrow at 3 p.m. as they wrap up the Newberry Classic against Flagler College. Morris plays Tennessee Temple in the early game at 1 p.m.
