MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Newberry College fought to a double overtime, 0-0, tie with Pfeiffer University in NCAA Division II women's soccer action Tuesday afternoon. The overtime match was the eighth of the season for the Lady Indians.
Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.) had five saves including two in the overtime periods to help and preserve the tie for Newberry.
With the shutout, Beckerle moves into sole possession of first place for career shutouts in the Newberry record books with 14. The senior had been tied with Bobby Gainey who played for the Lady Indians from 1996-99.
Brooke Tumblin (Florence, S.C.) led Newberry with three of the Lady Indians' eight shots.
Pfeiffer goalie Suzie Hinman made four saves in the game including one in the second overtime to keep the Lady Indians off the scoreboard.
With the tie Newberry moves within one game of the NCAA record for most overtime games in a season. The Lady Indians began the year by going to extra time in six of their first seven matches but had gone to overtime just once in the eight matches since. On the year Newberry has a record of 2-1-5 in matches that go to extra time.
Newberry next game is Saturday, October 20, at 4 p.m. when the Lady Indians travel to Milledgeville, Ga. to play the Georgia College and State Bobcats. The game will feature two regionally ranked squads as Newberry is ranked 7th in the latest adidas/NSCAA Southeast Region poll and Georgia College and State is ranked 10th .
