Women's Soccer defeats Presbyterian, 2-0, to pick up first conference win of season

Box Score

CLINTON - The Newberry Lady Indians defeated archrival Presbyterian College, 2-0, in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action before a crowd of 292 at Martin Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The Lady Indians improve their record to 5-3-1 and 1-1-1 in South Atlantic Conference play. The loss is the second consecutive for the Blue Hose in conference action, dropping them to .500 at 3-3 overall and 1-2 in South Atlantic Conference play.

Brooke Tumblin (Florence, S.C.) scored the first goal of the contest in the 27th minute on a double assist from Elisa Alvarez (Oviedo, Spain) and SAC Player of the Week Inga Woiwode (El Paso, Texas). Tumblin placed the ball into the upper left corner of the goal to tally what turned out to be the game-winner and give Newberry a 1-0 advantage.

The game would stay that way for almost 50 minutes until Alvarez rocketed a shot from 30 yards that Blue Hose goalkeeper Erin Sinkuler was unable to handle in the 76th minute.

The two teams combined for 31 shots in the game with both Sinkuler and Newberry starting goalkeeper Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.) in their 90 minutes between the pipes picking up six saves each. Beckerle earned her second shutout of the season, and the seventh of her career.

Newberry head coach Juan Pablo Favero said his team was proud of their effort and the result.

"We are very excited to get our first conference win, and to do so on the road against PC was not an easy feat," Favero said. "The girls showed a tremendous amount of composure and determination through the entire game, and were able to withstand all the pressure PC was pouring on us with their three forwards and their very direct attacks."

"I was also very pleased to see our other attacking players step up, and take control of our scoring situations when Inga was being double and tripled team. We are to the point as a program, that when opponents try to do that, our other great attacking players will make them pay, and that is what was missing last year. We need to continue to stay focused and to play with pride and good things will continue to happen," Favero added.

Newberry next sees action on Saturday, when the Lady Indians host Wingate University for their fourth SAC match of the season. Kickoff at the Newberry Soccer Complex is at 4 p.m.

The Blue Hose next travel to Tusculum for a SAC league game at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23 before returning home on Wednesday, Sept. 27 for a game against non-conference foe Francis Marion.
