Box Score COLUMBUS, Ga. - Gina Goforth scored an unassisted goal in the first half and Cortney Norris scored on a header off an assist from Kassy Boivin in the second half to lead Columbus State to a 2-0 win over the Newberry Lady Indians in front of 234 fans at the CSU Soccer Complex Friday.
The match was part of the Cougar Invitational Soccer Classic. In the early game, Tampa shut out West Georgia 2-0.
Newberry (2-1-0) opened the scoring chances just three minutes into the match when a shot by Inga Woiwode (El Paso, Texas) missed the frame by just inches.
Both teams traded scoring opportunities for the rest of the first half before Goforth got a loose ball and beat Newberry goalkeeper Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.) at the 9:33 mark in the first period for a 1-0 CSU lead. Newberry held a four to one advantage on corner kicks in the first frame.
Newberry narrowly missed on it's closest chance to equalize in the remainder of the first half when a shot by Elisa Alvarez (Oviedo, Spain) bounced off the post in the 16th minute.
The game stayed 1-0 in Columbus State's favor until Norris provided the insurance goal with a header off of Boivin's free kick at the 65:08 mark. CSU's Monica Sanchez made the goals stand up with a solid performance in goal. Sanchez had four saves in the second half. The Lady Cougars out-shot Newberry 11-9 for the game.
Each team was issued a yellow card and CSU had nine fouls compared to Newberry's eight. Goforth's goal was her second of the season.
"Despite the result, there were more positives than negatives in this match," Newberry head coach Juan Pablo Favero said after the match. "I thought we had a good performance and we controlled the possession, but [Columbus State] were able to convert on two of their chances, while we didn't capitalize on ours. We will learn and grow and bet better from this experience against top-level competition"
Newberry will next take on Tampa on Sunday in their final game of the Cougar Invitational at the CSU Soccer Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
