Box Score

NEWBERRY - The Newberry College Lady Indians earned their second victory of the young season with a 3-1 win over the Pfeiffer Lady Falcons in women's soccer action at the Newberry College Soccer Complex Tuesday.

Newberry (2-0-0) controlled the offensive flow of the game, firing off 27 shots to the visitor's 12. The first of those shots to find the back of the net came in the 11th minute of play.

Elisa Alvarez (Oviedo, Spain) scored the first goal of her Newberry career when she recived a low cross from Lauren Carbonell (Miami, Fla.) 20 yards from goal. Alvarez put the ball in the lower right corner past Pfeiffer goalkeeper Jennifer Lindow to open the game's scoring.

The Lady Falcons responded in the 15th minute with the leg of Maria Reis. After Megan Blevins earned a free kick from roughly 30 yards out on the left wing, Reis blasted a shot off the underside of the crossbar that Newberry goalkeeper Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.) was unable to stop, tying the match at 1-1.

With time running down in the first half, Brooke Tumblin (Florence) netted her second game-winning goal in two games in the 43rd minute. Mandi Butler (Holly Springs, N.C.) found Tumblin with a through ball, and Tumblin chipped the ball into the net from 10 yards out to put Newberry ahead, 2-1.

In the second half of play, the Lady Indians continued to perform well on offense, sending 14 shots off in the half.

The insurance goal came just 4:16 into the second half, as Butler was able to score her first goal of the season. After Tumblin worked her way behind the defense on the right wing, she sent to ball to Alie Brady (Summerville) in the center of the field. Brady passed it on to Butler in the left channel, and Butler made sure the goalkeeper had no chance to stop it with a low, powerful shot to the the right.

Newberry's defensive line was solid in the back, allowing no goals in the run of play, and giving up only four shots on goal in the run of play.

The Lady Indians continue with their tough schedule as they head to the Columbus State Invitational in Columbus, Ga. this weekend. Newberry opens tournament play against Columbus State on Friday at 5 p.m. The second game of the tournament comes against the No. 9 University of Tampa Spartans at noon on Sunday.
