NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry's Scott Gates (Atlanta, Ga.) and Daryl Van Vuuren (Durban, S. Africa) collaborated for a hard-fought 9-8 win in number one singles, but that was the Indians' only point of the afternoon as they fell, 8-1, to Carson-Newman this afternoon in NCAA men's tennis action.
Carson-Newman improves to 9-2 and 2-1 in the South Atlantic Conference. Newberry falls to 5-6 and 1-2.
Two singles matches went to three sets, but both went the Eagles' way. Van Vuuren took Ricardo Gutierrez to three sets but lost the third 7-5. Felipe Sobrinho also took his opponent in to three sets. After dropping the first 6-4, C-N's Rafael Soares prevailed 6-1 and 6-2.
Newberry will play tomorrow afternoon in its final home match of the year against Tusculum College at 1 p.m. At this match, Coach Staniford and his team will recognize both seniors. Carson-Newman will face Presbyterian College tomorrow at 10 a.m. in Clinton, S.C.
