WINGATE, N.C. - The Newberry College men’s and women’s tennis teams both won South Atlantic Conference matches at Wingate University Wednesday afternoon. The Newberry women defeated Wingate 6-3, while the NC men topped Wingate 8-1.
Newberry (5-5, 1-1 SAC) won the three doubles matches en route to the 8-1 league win over Wingate (3-8, 0-3 SAC). In number one doubles, Indian freshman Daryl Van Vuuren (Durban, South Africa) and junior Scott Gates (Atlanta, Ga.) defeated Wingate senior Joe Kanekar (Maharashtra, India) and freshman Christoph Voelkel (Buchholz, Germany) 9-7.
At the number one singles flight, Van Vuuren won a highly-contested match with Kanekar 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (3). Pavle Popovich (Belgrade, Serbia) claimed a 6-7, 6-0, 11-9 (super tie-breaker) decision over
Wingate freshman Jose Valarezo (Guayaquil, Ecuador).
Both Wingate teams return to action Friday, hosting Queens University of Charlotte in a non-conference twin bill. The Bulldog men will play the Royals at 2 p.m., with the women’s match to follow at 3 p.m. Both Newberry squads entertain Carson-Newman College for a SAC match Friday at 2 p.m.
