NEWBERRY, S.C.- The Newberry College men's tennis team showed great effort and stamina against Coker College in their match yesterday afternoon. Pulling out a close win the match ended 5-4. Winning at the number two and three doubles spots set the day into action. Daryl Van Vuuren (Durban, South Africa) and Scott Gates (Atlanta, Ga.) of Newberry battled their opponents to a challenging match but weren't able to pull off the win against Matt Byford and Duncan Grew, 8-6.
In singles action, each match put every player to the test. Coker College took spots one, two and three. Felipe Sobrinho in the number two spot took his opponent into three sets, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4. One singles win for Newberry came with the retirement of Danny Nash in the number four position against Toby Rawlings (Bristol, England), 6-3, 1-0. Newberry fought hard the rest of the afternoon to clinch the win.
Newberry will next face the Blue Hose of Presbyterian College on Thursday, March 23 starting at 2:00 p.m. Coker will host Belmont Abbey Saturday, March 18 at 1:00 p.m.
