Newberry netters dominate Claflin, 9-0

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College men’s tennis team shut out Claflin University yesterday afternoon at Cannon Courts, 9-0. With Claflin only bringing four players, the numbers five and six singles were won by default as well as the number three doubles. 

In doubles action, the number one team of Daryl Van Vuuren and Scott Gates, and the number two team of Felipe Sobrinho and Christian Kotanen each shutout their opponents 8-0.  “We played very efficient doubles,” stated head coach David Staniford.

This great effort followed into singles action where Van Vuuren, Sobrinho, Popovic, and Rawlings each won matches 6-0, 6-0. 

The Indians will be preparing for a match up with the 23rd-ranked Barton College Bulldogs.  This match will take place on Tuesday, March 14, 2006, starting at 2 p.m.
