Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. � With Newberry College and Mars Hill College both at the bottom of the South Atlantic Conference standings with 2-11 records coming into Saturday mornings� match, fans might not have expected a good volleyball match. Instead, the small, but loud, crowd of 42 was treated to a great one.
Freshman Lorena Maia began a career day in game one with the kills on the opening two points, followed by a kill by junior Laurie Barman that staked the Lady Indians to a 3-0 lead. Barman would slam down eight more in the opening fram and the scarlet and gray would never trail in game one winning 30-25.
In game two, the Mars Hill Lions came roaring back. Freshman Danielle Silvers fed the Lion attack in game two with six of her team high 16 and Mars Hill was able to squeek out 30-28 game two triumph.
However, in game three the pendulum of momentum swung back to the Lady Indians. Newberry played one of their best games of the season in the third frame. After gaining serve at 10-9, Newberry dominated the next 20 points. Cara Coleman retained serve for a 16-0 that included three aces from the junior from Allentown, Pa.
Though Coleman was outstanding on the serve it was Barman that stole the show. During the 16-0 run, Barman stuffed the Lion attack with three solo blocks and two assisted blocks. The Madison, Wisc. native also showcased her power with three kills.
Mars Hill regained serve for just two points before the Lady Indians closed out the Lions with four points on the strength of another Barman block and kill for an imprssive Newberry 30-11 win.
Game four once featured a rejuvenated Mars Hill squad. The Lions reduced their 11 attack errors in game three to seven in game four. Silvers once again caused fits for the Newberry team, chalking up five kills in game four. The Lions forced a deciding fifth game by knocking off Newberry 30-28.
In the final game, Newberry jumped out to a 4-1 lead with Lorena Maia on the serve. The Lady Indians would never look back going on to win 15-9. Cara Coleman led Newberry in the fifth frame with a perfect four kills on four attacks.
Coleman finished the morning with 10 kills. Consistent offense from Maia led to a career best 23 kills. Maia�s 353 kills on the season ranks as the second best all time for Newberry, trailing only Nichole Richmond�s 390 in 1996.
Maia was a sniper on the serve as well, also posting a new career high in service aces in a game with eight. Her 65 aces for the season ranks as the third best total in Indian history.
Junior Laurie Barman also set a career high for solo blocks in a game with six. With five assisted blocks as well, Barman totaled 11 blocks in the match to go along with 18 kills.
Two Lady Indians registered 20-plus digs led by libero Jennamarie Lesky. The freshman was agile, aggressive, and acrobatic while snuffing out 23 digs. Along with her 23 kills, fellow freshman Lorena Maia had 21 digs.
Senior Jessica Lipsi played an all-around game with 13 kills and 14 digs.
Splitting the setting duties were senior Jessica Lopez and freshman Kilee Ruppe. Lopez dished out 28 to complement five kills and a service ace, while Ruppe set up 26 kills and chipped in two service aces.
Newberry College celebrates senior Jessica Lopez and Jessica Lipsi with the final match of the season Tuesday at Eleazer Arena at 7 p.m. versus Augusta State.
