MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The Newberry women’s soccer team defeated Pfeiffer University on the road 2-0, spoiling the Falcons’ home opener.
Newberry's first good scoring chance occurred in the 31st minute when red shirt freshman Mandi Butler (Holly Springs, N.C.) beat the keeper, only to bounce a shot off the post. Finally, in the 35th minute, freshman midfielder Lauren Carbonell (Miami, Fla.) scored off a pass from fellow freshman Elyse Clark (Charleston, S.C.) to give Newberry a 1-0 lead. Pfeiffer was lucky to be down only 1-0 at the half as Newberry sophomore forward Adriana Farfan (West Palm Beach, Fla.) hit the post with a shot in the final minute of the first half.
The second half also provided few scoring chances for either team, but Newberry seemed to wear down Pfeiffer and pressed home a second goal in the 76th minute. Sophomore Ashleigh Mayer (St. Peters, Mo.), a transfer from Grand Valley State University, received a cross from Farfan and beat the keeper to net the final goal of the game. For the game, Newberry outshot Pfeiffer 12-7. Pfeiffer committed four more fouls than the Lady Indians and each team had a player receive a yellow card.
"This was a very important game for us after a slow start to our season,” said Newberry coach Juan Pablo Favero. “I thought Pfeiffer worked very hard. They are very talented. This was a big win for us. I expect both teams to do very well this season."
The Lady Indians stay on the road to face Mars Hill College on September 7 at 7 p.m. Pfeiffer also plays on September 7 when they travel to Converse College for a 4 p.m. match.
