Presbyterian tops Newberry in softball doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Presbyterian College took both games in Friday's softball doubleheader with Newberry, winning by scores of 2-1 and 6-3.  PC moves to 29-19, 7-5 in the South Atlantic Conference, while Newberry drops to 16-28 and 2-10 in the league.

Presbyterian got only five hits against Newberry starting pitcher Kayce McLeod (Newberry, S.C.), but had two in both the fourth and fifth frames to score Katie Fite (Conway, S.C.) and Whitney Hannon (Greer, S.C.).  McLeod put Newberry on the board in the third with a RBI single through the right side for the only Lady Indian run.

PC's Samantha Slater (Westerville, Ohio) gave up five hits and an earned run to improve to 8-5.  McLeod is 6-13 after the tough luck loss.

In game two, PC opened with four errors in the bottom of the first inning to allow Jessica Jackson (Batesburg, S.C.) and Courtney Lindler (Irmo, S.C.) to score unearned runs.  Newberry scored another run off a pair of errors in the third.

However, PC's bats were big enough to cover their mistakes, as they exploded for ten hits in the nightcap.  Down 2-0 after an inning, Fite doubled to left center to drive in a run.  In the third, Hannon intended to sacrifice fly to left, but a Newberry fielding miscue led to two PC runs.  Hannon came home after a second Indian error to go up 4-2.  Hannon drove in another run in the fourth, and Tina Deveaux (Simpsonville, S.C.) plated PC's sixth run in the fifth inning.

Megan Wheelus (Florence, S.C.) earned the win, pitching the last four innings and allowing only one hit, to move to 7-3 on the season.  Christina Kirby (Delmar, Del.) drops to 10-15 with the loss.

Newberry travels to Wingate for a 2 p.m. doubleheader, while Presbyterian hosts Tusculum at 1.
