MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia – The Georgia College & State University tennis teams remained undefeated after defeating Newberry College Tuesday afternoon at the Centennial Center Tennis Facility. The GC&SU women still have not lost a singles or doubles match in three full matches after knocking off the Indians 9-0 on Tuesday. The GC&SU men also won 9-0. Both Newberry teams fall to 1-2 on the season.
In the women’s match, 8th ranked GC&SU (3-0, 1-0 PBC) got off to great start by sweeping the three doubles matches. GC&SU’s Anna Shchupak and Celine Martin defeated Lauren Hartley and Isabel Kreidler 8-1 at No. 1 doubles, while Chenelle Kruger and Anna Davidsson knocked off Chanelle Clare and Bethany Poppe by the same 8-1 margin at No. 2. Jessica McKnight and Sofia Intriago completed the doubles sweep for the Bobcats at No. 3 with an 8-0 victory over Jessica Lipsi and Kim Dreiling.
GC&SU did not lose a set in singles play as Intriago blanked Lipsi 6-0;6-0 at No. 5, and Kruger defeated Clare 6-1;6-1 at No. 3 to earn the clinching fifth point. Elsewhere, Shchupak defeated Hartley 6-2;6-0 at No. 1, while Martin defeated Kreidler 6-2;6-3 at No. 2 singles. Davidsson picked up a 6-0;6-0 win at No. 4 over Poppe, and McKnight completed the sweep with a default win over Dreiling at No. 6 singles.
In the men’s match, 15th ranked GC&SU (4-0, 1-0 PBC) also started the day with three straight doubles wins. GC&SU’s Neil Scantlebury and Rodrigo Yamauti defeated Adam Morehart and Anthony Rinaldis 8-0 at No. 1, while Erick Siqueira and Brandon Lee defeated Toby Rawlings and Oliver Elston 8-1 at No. 2 doubles. Marcelo Ferreira and Renato Oliveira completed the doubles sweep at No. 3 with an 8-3 win over Jon Ward and Dennis Quaye.
In singles play, Scantlebury defeated Ward 6-0;6-0 at No. 1, while Siqueira defeated Kaushik Sridhar 6-1;6-1 at No. 2. Yamauti defeated Rawlings 6-2;6-1 at No. 3, and Lee knocked off Rinaldis 6-1;6-3 at No. 4 singles. Oliveira defeated Morehart 6-0;6-3 at No. 5, and Ferreira held off Elston 6-3;6-3 at No. 6 singles.
Both Newberry tennis teams have over a week off before hosting Francis Marion University on February 23 at 2 p.m.
