Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College used a balanced attack to shut out Augusta State University in volleyball (30-28, 30-18, 30-16) Tuesday night at Eleazer Arena. The 4-1 start by the Lady Indians is the best through five games with Nicolee Thompson at the reins.
Newberry (4-1) was only challenged in game one of the match, gaining an early six-point advantage at 15-9 until ASU roared back with five straight points. The ladies played neck-and-neck down the stretch. With the home team down 27-28, kills by Kristin Pulone (Diamond Bar, Calif.) and Adriane Miler (Summerville, S.C.) combined with an Augusta State error accounted for the final three points.
The Lady Indians started slow in game two, but capitalized on seven Jaguar errors during a 12-3 scoring run to put the game out of reach. The third and final game of the match saw Newberry go on a 14-4 tear, putting the Indians up 22-12, as they would cruise to a 30-16 third game win, the biggest margin of the night.
Freshman hitters Jamie Foster-Mann (Painted Post, N.Y.) and Cara Coleman (Allentown, Pa.) dominated the middle, recording seven and eight kills, respectively. Coleman took part in three blocks, and Foster-Mann had a solo block. Adriane Miler and Katie Stone (Greenville, S.C) killed eight balls each. Miler teamed with libero Kelly Harting to lead the way defensively, as the pair notched 10 and eight digs, respectively. Junior Jessica Lopez (Madison, Wisc.) set the table for the hitters, assisting 21 kills and scoring two points herself.
Augusta State senior Ashley Adams (Starwood, Wash.) had a game-high nine kills.
The Jaguars were hounded by errors all evening, as game three alone saw 12 errors by the visitors. Augusta State committed 23 attacking errors to Newberry's 15.
Newberry's last meeting with Augusta State came in 2002, when the Lady Jags swept the Indians 3-0 in Augusta.
Newberry travels to Anderson, S.C., to tackle the Trojans tomorrow in a 6:30 affair. Anderson is the only team to hand Newberry a defeat this season. Augusta State travels to Aiken for a three-game tournament beginning on Friday.
