Box Score 2 NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Lady Indians spoiled Wingate University's opportunity to share the South Atlantic Conference softball crown by capturing the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, 7-2, in college action at Newberry's softball complex. The Bulldogs won the opener, 6-1, behind a two-hitter by Wingate's pitcher Brittney Taylor (Lexington, N.C.).
Wingate (28-14, 9-5 SAC) wraps up second place in the conference, while Newberry is locked into seventh place at 26-25, 6-8 in the league. The Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Softball Tournament will match these two teams once again next Thursday morning at 11 a.m. on Field 1 at Rock Hill's Cherry Park.
Game One: Wingate 6, Newberry 1
Taylor struck out three batters, allowed two hits, and surrendered no earned runs to improve to 10-5 for the season. Newberry scored its only run in the fourth inning when Rebecca Backman (Columbia, S.C.) reached and moved to second on a throwing error, then came home on a wild pitch.
Wingate put a pair of runs on the board when four of WU's first seven batters singled, both scores coming from Cameron Langston's (Goldsboro, N.C.) two-out single. Langston notched her third RBI in the third inning on a one-out error, and then plated Wingate's fourth run on a fifth-inning double. The Bulldogs scored two more fifth-inning runs off Mandy Chester's (Charlotte, N.C.) sacrifice and Amy Parmalee's (Norwalk, Conn.) single.
Game Two: Newberry 7, Wingate 2
Junior Kayce McLeod (Newberry, S.C.) pitched the final 1 2/3 innings of the first game, holding Wingate scoreless, and allowed no earned runs in her game two start while striking out four. Taylor, called upon to start the nightcap, had only one good inning left in the tank as she gave up five hits and four runs in 2 1/3 innings.
The Lady Indians made up for their weak plate performance in game one by belting 12 hits for seven runs in the second game. Brantley Riley (Saluda, S.C.) singled to drive in two runs in the Indians' three-run third inning. Riley doubled in the second frame and scored off Betsy Shealy's (Leesville, S.C.) single up the middle. Laurie Epps (Blackville, S.C.) sacrificed to left field to score Newberry's first run.
Newberry added two more runs in the sixth inning when four of the first five batters singled. The Bulldogs attempted a comeback in the seventh inning with two away. Center fielder Stephanie White (Eatonton, Ga.) doubled to left center to drive in Wingate's second run, but McLeod ended the contest by striking out the next batter.
