Wolves Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Wingate

WINGATE, NC – The Newberry baseball team split a SAC doubleheader at Wingate on Saturday, taking game one 6–5 before falling 25–7 in game two at Ron Christopher Stadium. The Wolves built an early advantage in the opener and held off a late rally to secure the win before Wingate used a high-powered offensive effort in the nightcap to earn the split.

Game 1: Newberry 6, Wingate 5

Newberry opened its Saturday doubleheader at Wingate with a 6–5 victory, scoring three runs in the first inning and adding insurance in the middle frames before holding off a late Bulldog rally in the ninth. 

The Wolves totaled eight hits and plated runs in three different innings to secure the win. 

Logan Busenlehner led the offensive effort with a two-run home run as part of a 2-for-4 day, while Bryson Nuckols added two hits and two RBIs. Nick Foster contributed a double, drove in a run, and scored twice, and Chandler Mims also recorded a double. 

On the mound, Nick Riedel worked eight innings, allowing four runs with four strikeouts to earn the win before Cayden Hansen closed out the final inning in relief. 

Game 2: Wingate 25, Newberry 7

Newberry collected 12 hits in game two and scored five runs in the seventh inning, but Wingate used multiple big innings early to pull away in the second contest of the doubleheader.

Zane McLendon led the Wolves with three hits, including a double, and drove in three runs, while Chandler Mims added two hits and scored twice. Luke White recorded a double and scored a run, and Zechariah Haney and K.J. Leshko each contributed RBI hits as part of the Wolves' late offensive push.

The Wolves now look ahead to their next match vs. USC Aiken at home on Wednesday night.
