Box Score 2 The Newberry College Wolves earned their first South Atlantic Conference sweep of the season scoring the game winning runs in their final at bats in both games to sweep Coker 6-3 and 8-7 in eight innings.
Freshman pitcher
Katie Kapusta won both games of the doubleheader with one win as a starter and one in relief.
The Wolves scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a 3-3 tie in the opener and rallied from down 7-3 in the sixth inning to score three runs in the sixth, one in the seventh and the game winner in the eighth in the nightcap.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth in the opener,
Haidyn Campbell singled to drive in
Olivia Grant to give the Wolves a 4-3 lead and freshman
Avery Ingram followed with her first collegiate home run, a two-run blast to center to increase the lead to 6-3.
Samantha Minick worked a scoreless seventh inning to earn the save in relief of Kapusta who allowed just two earned runs on five hits over six innings.
In the nightcap, the Wolves took a 3-1 lead into the top of the sixth inning, but the Cobras exploded for six runs to grab a 7-3 lead.
But the Wolves responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth on a run scoring single by
Brooke Crosby and
Brooke Hodges and
Samantha Clark drawing bases loaded walks.
In the seventh inning
Payton Little tied the game with an RBI single to score Ingram.
In the top of the eighth, Kapusta, the third Wolves pitcher of the game, stranded the Cobras' designated runner at third base with a ground out and a strikeout.
The Wolves ensured there wouldn't be an additional extra inning when Clark singled to right to drive in
Christine Butler.
The wins improved the Wolves to 12-16 overall and 3-5 in the South Atlantic Conference.
Newberry travels to Lincoln Memorial Saturday.
