Wolves Unleash Offensive Fury in 23–5 Win Over Lees-McRae

NEWBERRY, S.C. — The Newberry Wolves men's lacrosse team picked up a resounding 23-5 home opener victory over Lees-McRae College at Setzler Field on Monday improving their early-season record to 2-1 on the young campaign. After a competitive first quarter, the Wolves exploded offensively in the second half to pull away from the Bobcats in dominant fashion.

Among the standout performers for Newberry, Liam Vollans was a catalyst on offense, tallying a team-high five goals and adding multiple assists as he consistently found seams in the Bobcats' defense. Gage Vigar was equally impressive, finishing with four goals and several assists to fuel Newberry's attack, while Mason Carfello and Scott Williams each chipped in three goals apiece. Their combined production helped the Wolves maintain pressure throughout all four quarters.

Newberry controlled the game from start to finish. Lees-McRae struck first, but the Wolves answered with four goals in the first quarter, taking a 4-2 lead after 15 minutes of action. Newberry extended that advantage in the second quarter with a six-goal spurt, closing the half with a commanding 10-2 lead. The offensive onslaught continued after the break, with the Wolves netting six goals in the third quarter and another seven in the fourth to seal the lopsided win. Lees-McRae managed just one goal over the final three quarters.

Newberry's balanced offensive attack was reflected in the stat sheet, as the team registered 56 shots with 38 on goal, far outpacing Lees-McRae's 24 shots and 12 on goal. The Wolves also showed their tenacity on the ground with 35 ground balls compared to 27 for the Bobcats, and they forced 28 turnovers while committing 17 themselves. In goal, Newberry's keeper held strong to keep Lees-McRae off the scoreboard in key stretches.

The Wolves will be back at home on February 14 at 4 PM against Mount Olive.
