NEWBERRY, SC – Newberry nearly erased a five-run early deficit, but the Wolves fell 7–6 to Virginia-Wise on Feb. 21 at the Smith Road Complex. UVA Wise scored three in the first and two more in the second to jump out front, then Newberry chipped away inning by inning and had the tying run within 90 feet late, pulling within one in the eighth before the Cavaliers closed it out.
UVA Wise opened the scoring with a three-RBI double in the first, then added runs in the second on an RBI walk and a sacrifice fly to make it 5–0. Newberry answered in the third as Luke Compton drove in a run with an RBI triple, then Nick Foster followed with a sacrifice fly to cut it to 5–2. After UVA Wise pushed the lead to 6–2 in the fourth, Compton launched a solo homer in the fifth, and the Wolves pulled within one in the sixth when Jomar Lugo delivered a two-RBI single to make it 6–5.
Virginia-Wise added an insurance run in the eighth, but Newberry immediately answered as Compton scored on a wild pitch to cut it to 7–6. Compton led the Wolves at the plate, going 4-for-5 with three runs, a triple, and a home run, while Lugo finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs. On the mound, Will Rissmiller steadied things with four innings of one-run ball in relief, and Newberry's bullpen kept the Wolves within striking distance the rest of the way.
The Wolves will stay in the Berry for their next match on Tuesday, Feb. 24th at 4pm vs. Francis Marion.
