Wolves Dominate Lander in Home Match Up 6-1

NEWBERRY, SC - The Newberry Wolves turned in a strong all around performance on their home courts Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Lander Bearcats 6-1 in nonconference action.

Newberry grabbed early momentum in doubles play, earning victories on courts No. 1 and No. 3 to secure the doubles point.

At No. 1 doubles, Renee Dorval and Yui Suzuki set the tone with a dominant 6-1 win, controlling the match from start to finish. The Wolves clinched the doubles point on court No. 3, where Margarita Roshka and Aina Miralles delivered a solid 6-3 victory. Court No. 2, featuring Hazel Vernon and Lina Sarhan, wrapped up shortly after in a tight contest that went to Lander, 7-6.

Holding a 1-0 advantage entering singles, the Wolves wasted little time building on their lead. Roshka earned a convincing straight-set win at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-4, while Sarhan followed with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 3 to push Newberry ahead 3-0.

Dorval then clinched the team victory at No. 5 singles, grinding out a 6-1, 7-5 win to secure the decisive fourth point and give the Wolves an insurmountable lead.

With the match already decided, courts No. 4 and No. 6 continued play. Miralles finished strong at No. 4 with a 6-3, 6-4 win, and Vernon battled back at No. 6 after dropping the opening set to claim a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory, adding to the final margin.

Lander's lone point came at No. 1 singles, where Suzuki fought through three sets before falling 1-6, 6-4, 4-6.

The Wolves will build off of this performance as they prepare for their next match up on February 21st against Erskine College in Due West, SC.
