Wolves Take Down the Warriors in Fifth Straight Shutout

NEWBERRY, SC – The Newberry College women's soccer team remained undefeated and continued its dominant defensive form with a 3-0 victory over Southern Wesleyan on Wednesday evening at the Smith Road Complex.

After a scoreless opening half, the Wolves took control in the second period. Emily Castaneda broke the deadlock in the 47th minute, rifling a free kick past the keeper for her first goal of the season. Just over 12 minutes later, Isabella Tellez doubled the lead, finishing off a setup from Natalie Ruiz. Less than three minutes after that, Ruiz added a goal of her own off an assist from Mikaela Warburton, putting the match out of reach for the Warriors.

Goalkeeper Madison Gutierrez made seven saves before giving way to Kianna Burgos, who closed out the final minutes to secure the combined shutout. The Wolves' back line of Castaneda, Sydney Gusewelle, and Avalina Espinoza once again held firm, limiting Southern Wesleyan to seven shots on target despite 17 attempts overall.

With the win, Newberry improves to 4-0-1 on the year while recording its fifth consecutive clean sheet, extending its shutout streak to 450 minutes to open the season. The Wolves return to Smith Road Complex on Saturday to open conference play vs. Tusculum at 3:30pm.
