NEWBERRY, SC – The Newberry College women's soccer team stayed unbeaten and recorded its fifth consecutive shutout with a 1-0 victory over Shaw University on Wednesday evening at the Smith Road Complex.
The decisive moment came in the 14th minute when Emily Castaneda converted a penalty kick, scoring her second goal of the season and providing all the offense the Wolves would need. Castaneda's finish was part of a dominant first half that saw Newberry outshoot Shaw 8-3.
Defensively, the Wolves still have not let up a goal this season. Goalkeeper Madison Gutierrez secured her fourth individual shutout of the year with two saves, while the back line anchored by Castaneda, Sydney Gusewelle, and Avalina Espinoza halted the Bears' attack. Newberry finished with an 18-7 shot advantage and earned eight corners to Shaw's one, controlling possession for much of the match.
With the win, the Wolves improve to 5-0-1 overall, extending their shutout streak to 540 minutes to begin the season. The Wolves are home in the next match vs. Carson-Newman at 7pm on Saturday.
