The Newberry College Wolves improved to 2-0 on the season with a 49-0 non-conference victory over Point University (Ga.)
The Wolves finished with 379 yards of total offense while holding the Skyhawks to just 90 total yards including seven yards rushing.
Six different Wolves scored touchdowns while the defense registered their first shutout since a 20-0 victory at UNC Pembroke on September 29, 2018 and the first shutout at Setzler Field since November 11, 2017 in a 28-0 victory over Mars Hill.
The defense sacked Skyhawk quarterbacks six times, registered an interception, only allowed Point to cross over the 50-yard line twice, forced eight three and outs and held them to 3-of-16 on third down.
The Wolves put together a dominate first half, outgaining the Skyhawks 298 yards to 23 enroute to a 35-0 halftime lead.
Quarterback
Reed Charpia completed 19 of 21 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns,
Keith Desaussure had four receptions for 75 yards and two scores, and Rico Dorsey had two grabs for 50 yards and a touchdown.
Kenmane Brunson and
Dwayne Wright combined for 44 yards on eight carries and a pair of touchdowns.
The Wolves defense smothered Point, allowing only two first downs, five rushing yards on 11 attempts and holding Skyhawk quarterback Payton Allen to 5 completions in 12 attempts for 18 yards in the first half.
The defense also stifled the Skyhawks by not allowing a third down conversion on seven attempts.
Newberry opened the scoring on a 41-yard touchdown pass from Charpia and Dorsey, followed up with another first quarter touchdown connection of 12 yards to Desaussure and capped the first quarter scoring with a 14-yard scoring run by Brunson.
Charpia and Desaussure connected on a 40-yard scoring connection  and Wright scored from seven yards out.
Reserve quarterback
Mason Kidd came off the bench in the third quarter and accounted for two touchdowns, completing a spectacular pass and catch to
Alex Meeks for seven yards and scrambling five yards for another score to complete the scoring.
Meeks touchdown grab was set up by an electric 61-yard punt return by
Tyleke Mathis.
The Wolves are 2-0 for the first time since 2022 and host Catawba Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at Setzler Field.
