Strong Start for Newberry Wolves on Day 1 of the SAC Outdoor Championship

Hickory, NC - The Newberry Wolves kicked off Day 1 of the 2025 South Atlantic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship with several standout performances across both the men's and women's teams, including two individual event champions and multiple finalists heading into Day 2.

Sean Price – Men's Javelin Throw Champion
 Price led the way for the Wolves with a dominant first-place finish in the men's javelin throw, launching a toss of 58.55m (192-01) to secure 10 team points. Price also picked up a point in the men's hammer throw, placing eighth with a mark of 47.81m (156-10).

Andrea Pascual Rivera – Women's Hammer Throw Champion
Pascual Rivera claimed the top spot in the women's hammer throw, recording a winning mark of 51.08m (167-07). Her performance added another 10 points to the Wolves' team total on the women's side.

Irma Watson-Perez – Women's Hammer Throw Runner-Up
Watson-Perez complemented Pascual Rivera with a second place finish in the same event, throwing 48.07m (157-08) and contributing 8 more points for Newberry.

Meah Jackson – Women's Long Jump
Jackson made her mark in the women's long jump, placing fifth overall with a leap of 5.59m (18-04.25), earning 4 points for the team.

Drew Benson – Men's 3000m Steeplechase
Drew Benson clocked 10:00.03 in the men's 3000m steeplechase to place 12th in a competitive distance field.

Prelim Highlights and Finalists:

  • Addison O'Cain qualified for the men's 110m hurdles final with a time of 14.86, finishing first in his heat.
     

  • Shamar Brown led the way in the men's 400m hurdles prelims with a time of 52.86, winning his heat and advancing to the final.
     

  • Landon Tucker also advanced in the 400m hurdles, qualifying with a time of 54.62.
     

  • Tyler Shumate secured a spot in the men's 800m final, finishing his prelim in 1:52.75.
     

  • Brittany Montgomery placed 9th in the women's 400m hurdles prelims with a time of 1:07.24, just missing the final.
     

  • Nia Quimby finished 17th in the same event at 1:12.30.
     

  • Kamryn Adderton ran 59.08 in the women's 400m prelims.
     

  • Tavarian Thompson (50.07) and Justin Canty (50.16) both competed in the men's 400m prelims.
     

  • Ja Narris Hillman ran 22.51 in the men's 200m.
     

  • Walker Flores placed 9th in the men's javelin with a mark of 46.28m (151-10), followed by Jhayden Gattison at 40.44m (132-08).
     

  • ShaNadia Marshall and Kennedy Myers placed 16th and 17th respectively in the women's hammer throw.
     

  • In the men's long jump, Jamari Bennett (6.25m), Dominic Blagburn (5.97m), and Billy Bishay (5.87m) rounded out Newberry's efforts.
     

  • In the women's long jump, Brianna Redmond jumped 5.33m, while Leiyana Rose reached 5.04m.
     

  • Daytron Moorer recorded a distance of 5.77m in the men's long jump.
     

The Wolves look to build on their early success as they enter Day 2 with momentum, multiple finalists ready to compete, and a shot at adding more points to the board.
