WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Newberry College men's and women's track and field teams opened their 2025 indoor campaign with a competitive showing at the JDL Early Bird Invitational on Sunday. The Wolves collected multiple top-10 finishes across sprints, distance, jumps, and throws to kick off the season with momentum.
Men's Highlights
Newberry's men were led by an impressive showing in the sprints, where Landon Tucker put together one of the top performances of the meet. Tucker won the seeded 400m in 49.55 and added a 22.74 performance in the 200m. Senior John Shivers also had a strong day, finishing 8th in the 400m (50.16) and running 22.75 in the 200m.
In the 60m dash, sophomore Jamari Bennett posted a fast 6.994, while freshman Cohutta Brown ran 7.33 in his collegiate debut. Junior sprinter Addison O'Cain opened his season with a solid 8.51 in the 60m.
On the distance side, junior Tyler Shumate delivered one of Newberry's best results of the day, placing 3rd in the mile (4:26.03) before returning for a 9th-place finish in the 3000m (8:52.39). Freshmen Jordan Kent (9:29.57) and Camden Longdon (9:33.21)Â added depth in the 3000m.
The Wolves excelled in the field events, stacking several top performances. Brown jumped 6.25m (20'6.25") for 16th in the long jump, followed closely by freshmen Dejon Barber (6.16m) and Billy Bishay (6.06m). In the throws, junior Jhayden Gettison earned a 9th-place finish in the shot put (13.28m) and placed 8th in the weight throw (14.67m). Senior Timothy Hartman led the Newberry throwers with a 5th-place performance in the weight throw (15.45m). Sophomore Dwayne Weiters also stood out, finishing 6th in the triple jump (14.58m).
Women's Highlights
The Wolves received several promising early-season results from the women's squad. Sophomore Kamryn Adderton posted one of the top finishes for Newberry with a 5th-place performance in the 400m (1:01.09), while also running 26.82 in the 200m. Freshman Bryanna Thompson contributed a strong early-season double with a 27.23 in the 200m and 8.63 in the 60m.
Freshman Anna Johnson completed a tough mid-distance double, running 2:44.74 in the 800m and later placing 20th in the mile (6:20.39). Senior Gaby Darazi also competed in the 800m, finishing in 2:52.60.
