Wolves Fall in Extra-Innings at Carolina Bank Field

FLORENCE, SC – In a non-conference matchup that spanned 12 innings, Newberry Baseball fell 7-6 to Mount Olive on Wednesday evening at Carolina Bank Field in Florence, South Carolina. The Wolves rallied late to force extras, but a walk-off double in the bottom of the 12th handed Newberry a loss.

Newberry trailed 5-1 through five innings but stormed back with three runs in the sixth and two more in the ninth to tie the game at 6-6. Parker Mergo delivered a massive spark off the bench, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs, including the game-tying hit in the final frame. Jonathan Velez added three hits and scored twice, while Luke Compton went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

The Wolves' bullpen kept the team alive deep into extras. Brayden Gilson threw two scoreless innings with two strikeouts, while Josh Bandy provided 3.2 innings of shutout relief. Ultimately, Mount Olive loaded the bases in the 12th and won it on a two-out, two-strike double to right-center.

Newberry showed grit throughout, tallying 13 hits and committing no errors in the field. The team's record moves to 22-28. The Wolves look to improve for this weekend's final SAC series vs. Anderson at the Smith Road Complex.
