NEWBERRY, SC – Newberry Wolves baseball secured their first SAC sweep of the season vs. the Coker Cobras. The Wolves rallied behind a complete game from Ethan LeBron, finishing game one 8-5. Picking up an early 3-0 lead in game two, the Wolves were able to keep steady and close the series with a 4-2 victory.
Game One: Newberry 8, Coker 5
Newberry found themselves down 5-0 by the fifth inning, but it was all the Wolves the rest of the way. A huge six-run sixth inning put the Wolves ahead, behind clutch hitting from Bryson Nuckols who hit a leadoff double. Kade Faircloth drove in the run with a triple to right center. Wilson Wages and Cooper Gentry combined to put up two more runs for the Wolves. They weren't done there with Chandler Mims and Luke Compton both adding an RBI to take a 7-5 lead. Adding some insurance, the Wolves added another run in the eighth to close out the game 8-5.
On the mound, LeBron pitched a complete game, picking up his fourth win of the season, allowing five runs on eight hits. Getting stronger as the game went on, the Wolves were able to score eight unanswered runs behind the senior's great day.
Game Two: Newberry 4, Coker 2
The Cobras got the scoring started, adding a run in the first inning. The Wolves answered back in the third inning putting up three runs of their own. Faircloth picked up his third extra-base hit of the season to score Compton. Wilson Wages added a two-RBI single to give the Wolves a 3-1 lead. Coker put the game in reach by adding a run in the fourth, but the Wolves finished them off with a final run in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Faircloth on a wild pitch.
Jacob Clark (4-4) picked up a win after an efficient four innings, allowing one run on five hits and two strikeouts. Hunter French provided strong relief pitching, earning the save, and allowing no hits, closing the door on the Cobras.
The Wolves will build off this series win in their next game vs. Augusta University on the road. The game will begin at 6pm on Tuesday April 2nd, at 6pm.
