MOUNT OLIVE, NC - A dominant third quarter powered the Newberry Wolves (1-2) to a commanding 12-6 victory over the Mount Olive Trojans (1-3) on Saturday afternoon at the Ray McDonald Complex.
Newberry entered halftime with a slim 5-3 lead, but exploded in the third quarter, outscoring the Trojans 6-1 to take full control of the game. Shane Halliwell and Ayden Snow each recorded two goals, leading a balanced Wolves offense that saw nine different players find the back of the net.
With Mount Olive pulling within one goal early in the third quarter, Newberry responded in dominant fashion. Liam Vollans and Ayden Snow ignited a four-goal run, capped by Halliwell's unassisted strike at the 4:36 mark to extend the lead to 9-4. Gage Vigar and Scott Williams tacked on late goals to put the game out of reach.
The Wolves were efficient, converting 3-of-7 extra man opportunities, while holding Mount Olive scoreless on three man up chances. Newberry also held a significant edge in ground balls (41-35) and outshot the Trojans 34-16 on goal.
With this win, Newberry picks up its first victory of the season and will look to build on the momentum on February 26th vs Lander University at home.
