The Newberry College Wolves baseball team (10-4, 3-2) lost a pair of tight games to Carson-Newman 14-6 and 3-2 at Smith Road Complex.
In the opener, the Wolves rallied from a 6-0 deficit to crawl within a run, 7-6 heading into the ninth inning before the Eagles tacked on seven runs for the final margin.
In the nightcap, freshman
Chansen Cole spun another gem, but the Newberry offense was limited to just two runs on two hits.
Cole (3-1), the nation's leader in strikeouts, fanned eight over six innings while allowing just two earned runs and three hits.
The Wolves grabbed a 1-0 on a
Jonathan Velez run scoring single and retook the lead in the third inning when Velez grounded out to drive in a run and give the Wolves a 2-1 lead.
But the Eagles scored two runs in the fourth to grab a 3-2 lead and neither team scored over the final three frames.
In the opener Carson-Newman scored six runs in the second inning to grab a 6-0 advantage.
The Wolves battled back with an unearned run in the second, two runs in the fourth on a
Kade Faircloth run scoring double and an error by the Eagles, two more unearned runs in the sixth and a run scoring single by Velez to cut the Eagle lead to 7-6.
But Carson-Newman took advantage of four walks and a hit batter to score seven runs in the ninth.
Faircloth and
Keillor Osbon each had two hits for Newberry while
Brayden Gilson was solid in relief allowing just three runs on five hits in 6.1 innings of relief.
The Wolves return to action when they host Erskine in a non-conference game Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. at Smith Road Complex.
