NEWBERRY, SC -The Newberry Wolves put on an offensive clinic Wednesday night at Setzler Field, cruising to a commanding 15-5 win over North Greenville. Led by a stellar six-goal performance from Amelia Hawkes, the Wolves improved to 2-0 on the season.
The game opened with a back-and-forth first quarter, as North Greenville struck first with a goal from Kami Straub at the 8:41 mark. Newberry responded quickly with scores from Lana Howell and Hawkes to even the game. Emma Jobs' late first-quarter goal, assisted by Hawkes, gave the Wolves a 3-2 edge heading into the second.
Newberry broke things open in the second frame, as Hawkes continued her dominance, netting two goals within a span of three minutes. Trysten Burns added another, and despite a late push from North Greenville, the Wolves carried a 7-4 lead into halftime.
The third quarter saw Newberry seize full control, outscoring the Crusaders 5-0 in the period. Dakota Beasley, Serena Elias, and Burns each found the back of the net, while Hawkes completed her sixth goal of the evening. The Wolves' defense, anchored by goalkeeper Mackenzie Dorr's 10 saves, shut down North Greenville's attack, keeping them scoreless in the third.
In the final frame, Newberry continued to apply pressure. Mackenzie Watson and Olivia Travassos each capitalized on free-position shots to extend the lead to 15-4. Though Straub managed a late goal for the Crusaders, it was too little, too late, as Newberry sealed the dominant victory.
Hawkes led the way with six goals and two assists, while Howell and Burns each tallied two goals. The Wolves outshot North Greenville 30-17 and controlled possession with a strong performance on ground balls (30-19).
Newberry will look to keep their momentum rolling as they prepare for their next matchup on February 15th at home against Barton College.Â
