MEADOWVIEW, Va. – The Newberry men's basketball team put together a strong offensive showing Saturday afternoon but came up just short in an 80–74 road decision at Emory & Henry inside the King Center.
Newberry was efficient on the offensive end, shooting 48.1 percent (25-of-52) from the field while scoring 32 points in the paint and dishing out 17 assists as a team. The Wolves also did solid work at the free-throw line, converting 18-of-22 attempts, and generated extra possessions with 10 offensive rebounds, keeping consistent pressure on the Wasps throughout the contest.
Drake Downs led the way with an outstanding performance, pouring in 24 points on 11-of-15 shooting while pulling down eight rebounds. Malakhi Stremlow added 15 points, going 5-of-11 from the floor and knocking down 5-of-6 free throws, while Houston Jones chipped in 14 points, including three three-pointers, to give Newberry multiple scoring options.
The Wolves stayed within striking distance all afternoon, outscoring Emory & Henry 42–41 in the second half. Drew Robinson contributed nine points, hit three triples, and handed out four assists, while Makhi Rivers controlled the tempo with five assists, two steals, and key trips to the free-throw line. Newberry finished with 34 total rebounds and continued to compete on both ends against a tough conference opponent.
With the result, Newberry moves to 5–4 overall and 2–3 in South Atlantic Conference play. The Wolves return home on Tuesday, December 17, when they host Anderson in Eleazer Arena.
