NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Newberry College women's basketball team kept its undefeated start alive on Tuesday evening, grinding out a 60–59 victory over Lander inside Eleazer Arena. With the win, the Wolves improve to 3–0.
Newberry leaned on timely shot-making, defensive toughness, and a standout night from Rickell Brown, who poured in 20 points on 5–for-9 shooting and a 9–for-10 performance at the free-throw line. Brown also added four rebounds, four steals, and a block to lead the effort on both ends of the floor. The performance capped off back-to-back strong outings for Brown, who scored 21 points against Barton on November 14.
The Wolves struggled to find rhythm in the opening quarter and trailed 16–12 after the first 10 minutes, but a composed second-quarter push — scoring 18 points and tightening up defensively — helped Newberry enter halftime with a narrow edge. From there, the Wolves continued to string together stops, forcing 15 steals and turning Lander's 24 turnovers into 17 points.
Marykate Kent delivered a crucial spark with 14 points on four made three-pointers, including a momentum-shifting shot late in the second quarter. Leigha Harris added 5 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals in a balanced effort, while Hannah Nimmo provided strong minutes off the bench with 5 points and 5 boards. Ryann Hernandez chipped in 4 points and four rebounds in 13 minutes.
On the glass, Newberry outrebounded Lander 35–33, relying on a full-team effort to control key possessions. Defensively, the Wolves' ball pressure dictated long stretches of the game, helping them overcome cold spells and maintain control entering the final minutes. Lander's late push cut the lead to just one, but Newberry's composure at the free-throw line — finishing 17-for-25 — helped seal the narrow victory.
The Wolves now turn their attention to their next matchup on November 21, when they host Toccoa Falls College at 6:30 p.m. inside Eleazer Arena
