SALISBURY, NC – Marykate Kent led Newberry with 13 points, knocking down three three-pointers, while Jess Tomkins anchored the defense with 8 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 steals. Despite a close first half, Catawba pulled away in the second half to hand Newberry a 57-49 loss at Goodman Arena.
Kent finished with 13 points, hitting 3-of-12 from beyond the arc and going 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.
The Wolves had some energy coming from the bench with Caylin Moment adding 9 points and 4 rebounds, shooting 4-of-8 from the field, and Jayla Cook tallying 8 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals in 18 minutes.
Newberry held a slight rebounding edge, 39-37, including 14 offensive rebounds leading to 10 second-chance points.
Newberry outscored Catawba 17-13 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to close the gap.
The loss drops Newberry to 5-15 overall and 4-12 in SAC play, as they look to bounce back in their next contest against Limestone at home on Saturday, February 1st at 2pm.
