RECAP: Newberry football falls in their season opener against #5 Valdosta State, 27-14. 2,520 fans were in attendance as Newberry College celebrated Military Appreciation Night and the 2024 Newberry College Athletics Hall of Fame Inductees.
INSIDE THE GAME
- Valdosta State jumped out to a 7-0 lead on their first drive of the game as QB Sammy Edwards connected on a 35-yard touchdown pass to Xyre Wilson.
- Newberry responded early in the second quarter to tie the game as QB Izayah Whiteside rushed for a 19-yard score.
- The Blazers answered right back on their next drive as Sammy Edwards capped off a four-play drive with a 30-yard touchdown run.
- Valdosta State finished off the second quarter scoring with an Austin McKay field goal to take a 17-7 lead into the half.
- Both defenses held strong for the majority of the third quarter. However, Valdosta State was able to strike for their final touchdown of the night at the 3:49 mark with a Blake Hester 3-yard touchdown run.
- Austin McKay connected with his second field goal of the game to make it 27-7 midway through the fourth quarter.
- The Wolves added one last touchdown in the final minute of action on a 1-yard Dwayne Wright run to make the final score, 27-14.
