Wolves Lose Shootout To #1 Ranked Keiser

Box Score Quarterback Reed Charpia came off the bench to account for 298 yards of total offense and two touchdowns, but the #1 ranked and defending NAIA national champion Keiser Seahawks outlasted the Wolves 42-33 at Setzler Field.

Charpia, in his first action of the season, came on late in the second quarter and immediately led the Wolves on an eight play, 79-yard drive that culminated in his 25-yard touchdown run to give the Wolves a 17-14 lead.  He completed two of four passes for 33 yards and ran the ball twice for 33 additional yards and the score.
The key plays of the drive were a 26-yard pass completion from Charpia to Keith Desaussure on third down from the Wolves' 36-yard line and Charpia's touchdown run on third and 12 from the Seahawk 25-yard line.

Charpia completed 15 of 28 passes for 226 yards and ran the ball five times for 72 yards and two touchdowns.  His second touchdown run came on the final play of the game from 13 yards that capped a seven play, 91-yard drive.

The game started off with a bang when Jalen Stradford stepped in front of a Shea Spencer pass and returned it 80 yards for a touchdown to give Newberry a 7-0 lead just two minutes into the game.
Keiser grabbed the lead for good just before halftime, scoring a touchdown with 26 seconds left to head into the locker room with a 21-17 advantage.

Quez Spells scored his first collegiate touchdown on a spectacular 33-yard run early in the fourth quarter to cut the Seahawk lead to 28-24, but Keiser would score  a long touchdown on the first play following the ensuing kickoff to build the lead back to 35-24.

Keiser added another touchdown after a blocked field goal and long return with just over three minutes left to cap their 13th consecutive victory dating back to last year's national championship season.

Newberry outgained Keiser 473 to 470 including a 284 to 210 advantage through the air.

Running back Dwayne Wright had 56 yards rushing on 14 carries, Desaussure had eight catches for 69 yards while Ja'Corey Martin and Wright each had three catches for 58 and 50 yards receiving respectively.

Punter Burke Nettles had a pair of punts for a 42.5-yard average including one of over 50 yards and the other downed inside the Keiser 20-yard line.

Bryce Early converted field goals of 37 and 38 yards and had five touchbacks on kickoffs.

Chucky Roach and KJ Robinson led the defense with seven tackles apiece.

The Wolves open the South Atlantic Conference season Saturday afternoon at Tusculum in Greeneville, North Carolina.
